It's quite heavy I'm not sure you'd want it all made from steel. They did offer a steel barrel upgrade, which makes almost all of it steel, except the handle and brass parts. I assume they could offer a steel handle in the future for those who are masochistic.
Hi Kane, the Driver used in our campaign images is actually a handmade stainless steel prototype, and wouldn't have worked for the Driver on a larger scale- partly because it was just so heavy! The intentions for the Driver have always been to have it made from hard anodised aluminium as you can see in our early campaign details https://tinyurl.com/2zxh8r6r.> The initial plan for the light Driver was a much more matte finish, but after feedback from our backers on Kickstarter we looked into this again and decided to change the anodising to match our existing MetMo Pen for a more metallic finish. We don't have plans to release the current version of the Driver in stainless steel, but as I'm sure many of our backers will agree it's still a great tool!
Peg, I was wondering the same thing at first and now that I have my black anodized finish I really love it... and it's definitely super heavy, so I can just imagine how heavy it would've been if it was all Stainless Steel. Bottom line... I love it just the way it is.
The thing I'd really like to see is an upgraded handle which was:
made of titanium --- stronger than it needs to be, but potentially lighter than alu. for a given volume/strength
locked in place securely
but also allowed easily accessible bit storage --- look at the Countycomm Titanium Aviation Multi-Bit Screwdriver for one example, or the PB Swiss Insider series for a few more
